The power rates have been hiking in Japan. It is basically because of less dependence on nuclear power after 2011 and recent high fuel prices by weak yen.
In this situation, the industry of convenience stores, most of which are open 24/7 and use much electricity, is tackling energy saving.
Seven-Eleven group has now four chain stores where state-of-the-art underground thermal heat pumps are installed. The first store in Dazaihu city, Fukuoka prefecture, was opened last June.
The group also has 6,500 solar-powered franchisees at the end of this February.
It has a plan to expand them up to 7,000.
As well, Family Mart has 12 stores with solar panel plus battery at an experimental level.
Lowson has 1,000 solar already, and is considering to double the number.
Circle K Thanks is going to install solar at 800 stores starting from this month.
